Hopes & Dream Quilt Challenge for ALS

We are sincerely grateful to everyone who has helped to make our 2016-2017 Hopes & Dreams Quilt Challenge a wonderful success!

During the 2016-2017 Challenge, which lasted from Aug. 1, 2016, until July 31, 2017, we received 1112 quilts and quilted items generously donated by caring quilters who gave their time, talent, and supplies to provide love and support to the ALS community.

Most of the donated quilts have been hand delivered to ALS patients throughout the United States with the help of many chapters of the ALS Association.  The quilts provide not only warmth to patients, but wrap them in the love and comfort that a handmade quilt brings.

We often receive and publish on our Facebook page lovely notes and pictures from ALS patients who have received a Hopes & Dreams quilt, which touches our hearts and show just how much these quilts mean to patients and their families.

Select quilts and craft items are sold, auctioned, and raffled to raise funds with 100% of the money used for ALS research!  This year we attended Virginia Beach's Santa's Stocking Craft Show and the Aviation Museum's Air and Auto show and sale.  Quilts were also sold at Richard Stravitz Fine Arts Galleries.

The Hopes & Dreams Quilt Challenge for ALS raised over $17,000 for research, supporting Emory University School of Medicine, The Packard Center for ALS Research, and the Felman Lab ALS Research in their fight to find a treatment and an eventual cure for ALS!

We will soon be announcing the winners of the Challenge, and posting pictures of select quilts to vote for your favorite in our "Sew Popular" division!

Thank you, to the following sponsors for providing
wonderful and exciting prizes:

C&T Publishing Supports the Hopes & Dreams Quilt Challenge

We are off to a great start for our 9th annual
2017-2018 Hopes & Dreams Quilt Challenge for ALS.
We are grateful to all of our sponsors who provide wonderful prizes each year,
including our returning sponsor, C & T Publishing!

C&T Publishing

Supports the Hopes & Dreams Quilt Challenge

Hello Quilters Dream Batting Readers! We are the staff of C&T Publishing, a small quilting, sewing, and needle craft publisher based in Concord, California.

It all started with an impulsive promise back in 1983. When quilting teacher Roberta Horton told quilt-shop owner Carolie Hensley that she wanted to write a book on Amish quilts, but hadn't found a publisher yet, Carolie quickly said that she and her husband Tom would publish Roberta's book. The Hensleys launched C&T Publishing from their garage, with a catalog of exactly one book: Roberta Horton's An Amish Adventure

Jump ahead to today and Carolie and Tom Hensley have turned the business over to their sons Todd and Tony, who are assisted by a staff of more than 50 employees. We also have three imprints, Stash Books, FunStitch Studio, and Kansas City Star Quilts.

Now, in 2017, C&T Publishing has been in business for 35 years, and we continue to grow and evolve every day. One of our big projects this year is revamping our YouTube channel, adding more demos and tutorials from our best-selling and debut authors, constantly improving our video quality, creating eye-catching covers for the videos, and even filming a new video to introduce ourselves! If you’re curious, you can watch that video below.

We’re so pleased to be able to support the Hopes & Dreams Quilt Challenge for ALS. As a small company mostly made up of quilters, sewists, and other crafters, we feel deeply connected to the quilting community, so when Quilter’s Dream Batting approached us with a request to sponsor the challenge, we never hesitated. In our opinion, one of the most beautiful aspects of the quilting community is how we can come together to support not only our own community but the community at large, whether we are auctioning off charity quilts, making quilts for people in need, donating our time and sewing skills, or coming up with other creative ways to help others. We look forward to supporting the Hopes & Dreams Quilt Challenge for many years to come!

Shannon Fabrics Supports the Hopes & Dreams Quilt Challenge for ALS

Greetings from Shannon Fabrics! Can we just say how much we love Quilters Dream® Batting?  In fact, almost all of the quilts that are made by our Cuddle® Specialists are made with Quilters Dream Batting. It’s easy to work with, soft, fluffy, warm, and it makes our applique quilts especially fluffy! We made this cute elephant quilt with Dream Puff. Shannon Fabrics is also so proud to be a sponsor of the Quilters Dream Hopes and Dreams Quilt Challenge forALS which raises awareness of ALS-Lou Gehrig’s Disease, provides quilts to ALS patients and raises funds for the cause.

Quilters Dream® Batting is amazing. We especially love the Dream Puff for Cuddle®. It is light and lofty. It doesn’t add weight. And it is 1.5 times warmer than down. We used Quilters Dream Puff for our Elephant Quilt and it turned out great.

Since the majority of our quilts use a “quilt as you go” method, using batting like Quilters Dream Puff makes our quilts look extra fluffy and plush, and here at Shannon Fabrics, we are all about the extra softness and yummy goodness! Here is an example of one of our applique quilts…pattern will be available from the Shannon Fabrics website soon!

You can find Shannon Fabrics at many local quilt shops and fabric stores, and online at fabric.comtheminkyboutique.com, and fabricdepot.com. You can also view our Store Locator to find online shops and shops near you.

Stay up-to-date on what’s happening! Join our mailing list. Subscribe to our blog, Sewciety. Connect with us on social media too on the following: FacebookPinterestTwitterYouTubeInstagram, Google +, and Flickr.

Thanks for letting us visit with you today. If you’d like to find out more about the Hopes and Dreams Quilt Challenge for ALS, click here.

Petition for GM6 drug that could help ALS patients.

The drug company, Genervon, a small biotech,  is doing the unheard of in ALS.  In early February, Genervon, is going to meet with the FDA to ask for accelerated approval for its drug, GM6,  for ALS.

This trial drug was tested on 8 ALS patients and it has helped, slowed or stopped their ALS progression!   PLUS, a ventilator patient (like Josh) who has had ALS for 9 years, took the low trial dose of GM6 --- and it has helped him with breathing, speech and swallowing!

We need your help (again)!

There is an important petition on Change.org requesting Congress to support us in asking the FDA to approve this drug NOW.     It is very important to get the maximum number of signatures for maximum impact to influence and achieve drug acceleration and approval.

I am asking that you please take a moment to sign this Change.org petition asap (see below)-- and forward this to your contacts and share on your Facebook page - asking for as many signatures as possible.

Also...please consider submitting  a request directly to the FDA (link below).

This drug could possibly help Josh and all of our friends currently living with ALS.   If GM6 receives accelerated approval - it's the only drug close to having a chance of helping Josh and today's ALS patients.  Without accelerated approval of GM6 - today's ALS patients do not have any medication options to help them.

How you can make a difference:
1. Go to https://www.change.org/p/food-and-drug-administration-preliminary-approval- of-genervon-gm6-for-use-in-als and sign the petition asking the FDA for conditional approval of GM6.
2. Go to http://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/email/cder/comment.cfm and submit a comment to the FDA supporting conditional approval of Genervon GM6 for people with diagnosed ALS.

3. Write your congressperson and senator asking them to urge the FDA to grant conditional approval.

4. Share this post on every social media you use. This message needs to go viral.

Thank you so much (again),
Kathy Thompson

To Give a Handmade Quilt Is to Give a Gift of Love...

"To know that even one life has breathed easier because you have lived, that is to have succeeded."

                        ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

This August 2013 marks the beginning of the 5th Annual Hopes & Dreams Quilt Challenge for ALS.  Many of you know this challenge and read these words with passion.  You have taken of your time, talents and treasures in picking out and purchasing fabrics, threads, needles and batting to design a quilt that you then donate to the Hopes & Dreams Quilt Challenge.

Just a few of the more than 3,300 quilts sent in from across the U.S. to the Hopes & Dreams Quilt Challenge for ALS.

Fabric Postcards for ALS research

Fabric postcards for the Hopes and Dreams for a Cure art and quilt exhibit are starting to come in! In our last blog we shared exciting news that a Virginia Beach, Virginia art gallery will feature the Hopes and Dreams quilts and fabric postcards sent in from all over the United States to benefit those living with ALS and raise funds for research. We are hoping to have a wonderful selection of fabric postcards to sell at the exhibit. 100% of sales from quilts and fabric postcards, and a portion of art and jewelry sales will go toward ALS research.

Month-long Celebration of Moms!

We have some exciting news to share with you, and while it is quick notice, we think you might want to participate.  The Hopes & Dreams for a Cure for ALS (Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis/ Lou Gehrig’s Disease), has been given the opportunity to have a month-long Celebration of Moms and the special women in our lives beginning the first weekend in May – just in time for Mother’s Day .

The Richard Stravitz 30th Street Gallery on Pacific Avenue in Virginia Beach, VA, will be hosting an event that features quilts sent in from all over the United States to benefit those living with ALS, as well as raise much needed funds for ALS Research. The Hopes & Dreams for a Cure for ALS art and quilt exhibit opens Saturday, May 4, will be open Mother's Day, Sunday, May 12 and runs through Saturday, June 1st.

In addition to the quilts, there will be artwork capturing the loving essence of women in the form of oil paintings, watercolors and inks, jewelry, mixed media, hand blown glass and bronzed sculptures.
